Critical Analysis on the Book Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane Reviews

fantasy book reviews science fiction book reviews book review Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane by Suzanne Collins

The Prophecy of Bane continues the strengths displayed in Suzanne Collins' kickoff book in the serial, Gregor the Overlander . The book moves along rapidly and smoothly with few if any slow spots; the major characters, if non minutely detailed, have enough personality and reality to agree ane's interest and concern; and the setting, which every bit in the offset is probably the weakest chemical element in terms of vividness, is at least interesting enough in general terms and so that its lack of detail is non much of a flaw.

As in book one, Gregor enters the Underworld to save a family fellow member. In book one it was his father; here it is his little sis Boots. I sees the freshness and originality early on in the book as the quest quickly changes from what the reader beginning assumes it volition be — the search for Boots — to a more dark journeying: Gregor'due south quest to chase down and kill solitary the Blight (the prophesied futurity king of the Rats). Without giving things away, at that place are other such surprises in store for the reader; not only surprises of plot but also surprises of genre, so one doesn't feel stuck in the aforementioned erstwhile young adult fantasy quest rut.

fantasy book reviews science fiction book reviewsThe book is also darker than virtually young fantasy, and the darkness runs from start to finish, starting time with the fact that (as opposed to what 1 would expect in the genre) not all is well since Gregor'due south "successful" rescue of his father in book one. His father hasn't come up close to recovering and the family unit is paying both an emotional and economic price. This sort of reality, and the attention paid to long-term effects (with his father'southward illness as well as other events from book 1) is one of the means Gregor is distinguishable from much of what is out at that place. Another way is how expiry is not simply an abstruse idea in this book but a solid and saddening presence.

The end or nigh-stop is a bit weak in comparison to the residue of the book equally information technology seems to accept Gregor acting a bit unbelievably with only a nod to contriving an explanation (more particular would ruin a surprise). That'south the merely major weakness in the novel. Over again, a few of the characters could exist more than fully formed, the setting certainly could be more fully detailed, but one understands why Suzanne Collins may have traded item for speed and in reality, the flaws are relatively minor in comparison to how the story and master characters hold involvement. Some of the lack of detail is too clearly intentional, as at to the lowest degree i more Gregor book is manifestly on the mode. If the get-go two are any judge, 1 can promise for even more. Strongly recommended for "older" young readers. Younger ones can certainly follow the book, but the context and setting (an earth at their feet filled with giant mankilling rats) forth with the few deaths might be a flake much — parents are the all-time gauge. The parents themselves, however, might be pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoy it if they pick it upwards.
